Shape Is Skill — And Timing
A well-shaped hedge does not happen by accident. It takes experience to trim a hedge into a clean, even form — and it takes regularity to keep it there. Leave a hedge too long between trims and it loses its shape; getting it back then means harder cuts into older wood, which many species resent.
Regular light trimming does the opposite: it holds the shape, encourages dense healthy new growth, and removes foliage that pests or disease have damaged — which lets the hedge photosynthesise properly and stay vigorous.
How Often Should A Hedge Be Trimmed?
It depends on the species. Fast growers like Eugenia and Syzygium (lilly pilly) and Ficus Tuffi often do best trimmed every three to four months — with Eugenia, frequent trimming also helps keep the pest and fungal problems it is prone to in check. Slower-growing hedges may only need a six-monthly or annual trim.
Pittosporum is its own case: it responds poorly to severe reduction, so it is generally better trimmed at least twice a year and never let get badly away. And whatever the species, we avoid major trimming in the hottest part of summer or the middle of winter where the plant is vulnerable to it.

If something needs attention we tell you, and where it is warranted we will recommend a plant health plan — treatment, feeding or an adjusted trimming pattern — rather than just carrying on cutting.

How often should hedges be trimmed?
It depends on the species. Fast growers like Eugenia (lilly pilly) and Ficus Tuffi often suit a trim every three to four months; slower species may be fine six-monthly or annually. Pittosporum is best trimmed at least twice a year, because it responds poorly to hard cutting once it has got away. We recommend a schedule per hedge when we see it.
When is the best time of year to trim?
Most of the year works for light maintenance trims. What we avoid is major trimming in the hottest part of summer or the middle of winter for species that are vulnerable to it — big cuts at the wrong time stress the plant and can leave it looking bare for longer.
My hedge is overgrown — can it be brought back?
Usually, yes, but how fast depends on the species. Many hedges take a firm reduction well; others, like pittosporum, need a more gradual approach over several trims. We will tell you honestly what your hedge can take and what the recovery will look like.
Do you take the clippings away?
Yes — clean-up is part of the job. Clippings are gathered and removed, and paths and lawns are left tidy. You get the sharp hedge without the mess.
My hedge looks unhealthy — can you help?
Yes. We check hedges for pests, disease and stress as we trim, and where something is wrong we recommend a plan — treatment, feeding, or a different trimming pattern. Eugenia hedges in particular benefit from this, as frequent light trims help keep their common pest and fungal problems in check.
What determines the quote for hedge trimming?
The height and length of the hedge, how easy it is to access, and how much green waste the trim will produce. Send a few photos showing the hedge and its surroundings and we can usually quote from those.
