Mulch, Done Properly
Mulch is the single best-value improvement for most Auckland garden beds: fewer weeds, better moisture retention through summer, and soil that improves as the mulch breaks down. But the order of work matters — weeds get treated or removed first, then the mulch goes on at a proper depth, roughly 6–10 cm. A thin scattering over live weeds is decoration, not mulching.
The type matters too. Forest-floor mulch gives a natural finish and feeds the soil well. Black mulch suits formal gardens, though it contributes less organic matter. Arborist mulch is the economical option, with the trade-off that it can contain mixed material like palm, pine or flax. We will recommend the right one for the garden and the look you want.
One thing we advise against: laying mulch over weed mat. The mulch breaks down into a fresh layer of growing medium on top of the mat — and weeds establish in that layer anyway, now with a barrier making them harder to pull properly.
Working With Auckland Clay
Much of Auckland gardens on heavy clay: waterlogged in winter, brick-hard in summer, and tough on plants year-round. There is no overnight fix — and the common quick fixes, like tipping in sand or gypsum without understanding the underlying problem, often disappoint.
What genuinely works is organic matter, added generously and repeatedly: quality garden mix worked in when planting, and more organic material added over time. Planting itself helps too — fallen leaves and root activity feed the soil life that gradually improves structure and drainage. It is a campaign rather than a moment, and we can run it for you.
Feed The Soil, Not Just The Plants
Sheep pellets and fertiliser alone will not transform a tired bed — they feed plants briefly without fixing the soil they grow in. Some composts bring their own problems, arriving acidic or with material that has not fully broken down.
Our approach is to build the bed itself: quality garden mix, the right mulch, and feeding that matches what the plants actually need. Beds built this way hold moisture better, fight off weeds better, and need less rescuing every summer.

What is soft landscaping, exactly?

How much mulch does a garden bed need?
Roughly a 6–10 cm layer, applied after the weeds have been treated or removed — depth is what suppresses weeds and holds moisture. We will calculate the volume for your beds and recommend the right type: forest-floor for a natural look, black for formal gardens, arborist mulch as the economical option.
Will mulch stop my weeds completely?
It suppresses them substantially, but no mulch eradicates established perennial weeds — bulb weeds like oxalis and runners like kikuyu need dealing with directly. The winning combination is weed control first, then mulch to keep the pressure down.
Can you do anything about heavy clay soil?
Yes — with honesty about the timeframe. Clay improves through repeated additions of organic matter and quality garden mix, helped by planting that builds soil life. Quick fixes like sand or gypsum without understanding the actual problem tend to disappoint, and we will say so rather than sell you one.
Should I put weed mat under the mulch?
We advise against it. Mulch breaks down into a fresh growing layer on top of the mat, weeds establish in that layer anyway, and the mat then makes them harder to remove properly while also stopping the mulch feeding your soil. Depth of mulch beats mat.
Is this a one-off job or ongoing?
Either. A one-off bed refresh or mulching round makes an immediate difference; soil improvement on clay works best as repeat visits over time. Many clients fold it into regular maintenance so the beds keep getting better each season.
